Palpable bony prominences include:

  • Anterior-superior iliac spine (ASIS).

  • Tubercle of the iliac crest: at the widest part of the pelvis, behind the ASIS.

  • Pubic symphysis: in the midline anteriorly.

  • Pubic tubercle: about 1 inch lateral to the pubic symphysis.

  • Greater trochanter of the femur.

  • Pubic arch: felt at the uppermost limit of the medial aspect of the thigh.

Note: A line drawn horizontally from the pubic tubercle passes through the femoral head.
